i hear the plextor's are a little quieter, and i dont mind the extra 50 bucks too much, but 50 dvd's instead would be kind of nice, is the extra money worth it

THanks

Go with the plextor - I have had 4 burners and one ultra cav scsi cdrom from plextor and never had one problem yet. I would also get the retail one for the software...

I have the 708a and it does extremely well - one of the only burners that will burn 8x on some of the 4x media...love this drive...

I recently went thru this ordeal, and finally decided on the Pioneer 107D for $160 at newegg.

It was really between 3 units, the Sony 530A, Plextor 708A and the Pioneer.

The only advantage the Sony had over the PIO IMO was the 40X CD-R. They Plextor DVD-R is only 4x. The Pioneer would be perfect if it had 40X CD-R, but I'll live.

I went with plextor making my decision based on one of my friends who is a total fanatic with them. I didn't really know what were good brands when I started looking so I just looked at the one my friend always talked about. They seem to make really solid drives. Also, the benchmarks with them were really good. My rig (parts for it anyway) finally shipped from newegg with a plextor drive after 9 days of processing >.< I stuff I ordered is already outdated : (

Looked at Lite-on, NEC, Optorite and decided to go with the 8x TDK which is a rebadged Plextor. Quality is Plextor.

I usually do not buy till the prices hit rock bottom and then jump on like the end cycle of the cdrw's but the dvd backup bug bit me. I took a chance on this and I have not regretted it. Nice and quiet drive.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the above mentioned dvd burners.
