What dual core CPU matches or exceeds the power of an Athlon 2800XP?

I want to upgrade to dual CPU for better multitasking capabilities. I don't want to spend a lot of money right now because Conroe is coming out soon. What CPU on the market today has the same or better performance as a my old XP 2800?

I would have to say any of the dual cores, except maybe the 805 at stock speeds in non-smp aware apps.

Fix your title. It says 3800XP and I'm assuming thats a typo? ;)

ANY dual core cpu will most likely be faster than it, even at stock speeds.

The only thing that your CPU might actually beat (as stevty said above) is the 805.

Fixed.

Just about every dual core chip beats the XP 2800+. Heck, my single core A64 3200+ beats my XP 2400+ to pieces in everything.

I just got an opteron 146 and running it at 2.4. It is a lot faster than my old Athlon XP 2800+. Feels a lot more responsive, plus you can use PCI-express video cards. It's $155 at www.tankguys.com. If you are waiting on conroe - why pay more?

lol. heck, i thought i still had a cutting edge cpu.

Let me ask you guys (never had to ask this question before), if i upgrade to a Pentium D 930 series processor, what is a good motherboard for it? And I only have old IDE hard drives, and an AGP graphics card that I don't want to get rid of just yet. If I do upgrade, do I need to buy new SATA hard drives and a PCIx graphics card?

Don't go Intel right now. Not until their Conroe cores are out. If you do upgrade to a new AMD Skt 939 chip, make sure you get a motherboard that can support both AGP and PCI-e. Almost all motherboards still support IDE (as well as SATA), so you don't have to worry about getting new hard drives (I'm using two IDE HDDs, one of which was originally in my AXP machine).

EDIT: I'm talking about this board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157081

A dual core chip will be way ahead of your 2800+ in programs that take advantage of Dual core.

the 2800+ would probably be about even with the 805D in games, but in multimedia tests, the 805D will outdo your 2800+ Because of dual core. But even on non SMP programs, the 805D will be slightly faster..

The 3000+ is only ahead in games.

My advice would be to NOT upgrade... you've done this long with 2800+, just hang with it for a few more months. Because right now, there arent boards to support conroe so in a few months, you'll be switching everything all over again.

Just wait and hang on to the power of 2800+

The only CPU's that might be comparable are a Athlon XP @ 2.5ghz (like the mobile ones) vs A64 3000+. That MIGHT be equal if not faster for the XP (though I doubt it). The K8 architechture is so much better than the XP's.

Pretty much any modern CPU (that is in production) you buy will be better than an old AXP 2800+. Yes, this includes the lowly Celeron-D's (512KB; the 256KB ones are not in production anymore) and Sempron64's.

Why upgrade now if you want to upgrade to Conroe that will be out in a few months? In a few months you'll have to wait about 6 months to a years for prices to come down and for but fixes on the new motherboards and cpu manufacturing process to mature. Then, why not wait for the new AMD k9 to come out? Then, why not wait for prices to come down on the K9 and .......
