I need help because their "recommened" modems list doesn't help. Brand and model would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.
Well, if you are getting DSL from BST for the first time it's hard to compete with FREE. They will supply you with whatever Ethernet Modem they are pushing at the time. You will have to pay for it up front but then you get a full refund for it via rebate or credit on your bill.
If you don't want to mess with Rebates or be force fed a DSL Modem by the Phone Company and would like to go your own route there are number of DSL Modems that would work by simply putting in BellSouth's VPI and VCI numbers which is 8/35. Then you select either PPPOa or PPPOe and you're set.
The Zoom X3 (Ethernet only) and Zoom X4 (Ethernet and a USB port live at the same time) work on BellSouth with no problem. I am running an X4 now for 100 straight days without even a hiccup.

PS - USB is not as bad as it used to be. The Zoom 5510 USB Modem does all of the connecting for you, no more drivers to crash etc. The Modem works just like a Router so it is great for Apple Computers as well.
