If helping ........ that selfish element comes into play.

So ......... Hence the person is selfless and doing it solely for who he claims he is doing it for.

My brain hurts. 😕

But the feelings of satisfaction are a reward are they not? Do these people that help others not feel good about themselves afterwards?

I know people that do the odd thing to help others, like the odd bit of volunteer work, but I think that they're doing that because it makes them feel better about themselves. I don't believe they're doing that just to help some other people.

I'm not trying to say that selfless people don't exist, just that I think you can act selflessly (to an observer) but be acting for selfish reasons.

Or something. 😕 🙂

one of my professors a little ways back, read me like a book. He said "James, you do work to appease others, to receive their joy and thanks. You're the type that needs to be loved. This will hold you back at some point." He was absolutely right, I do my research because I think it will make an impact on millions of lives, and I'm going for a M.D./ph.D so I can help save a million lives. I'm afraid of the day my professors premonitions come true, and at some point, I know they will.

That's ultimately my motivation as well... and I have no idea what I'm going to do once that fails. I'm not in medicine, tho, thankfully.
