Don't doubt that women might not be totally forthcoming about the reasons. 'Exploring sexuality' sounds better than 'drug habit'.

Bottom ilne, it's an act of desparation degrading both parties for the most part. If she wanted to 'explore her sexuality' she could easily do it for free and choose a partner.

Then who pays the rent?

What drives a prostitute?

Usually they are too busy to own a car. Their pimp could drive them.
A client could drive them....

Self denial of the circumstances that put them in the position.

Now they need a justification for being able to stay there and not leaving.

40hr week @ mcdonalds = poverty.

Shens. $7.25/hr x 2080 hrs = $15,080. For a single person, poverty is at $11,070. You are right at it for a couple but how many couples at that level would be single income except by choice.

Most prostitutes come from broken families, alcoholic parents, or drug using parents, many were either abandoned by one or both of their parents, many were sexually abused at a young age.

But what keeps them in the prostitution business is very complex. They usually lack the social skills to hold a "normal" job, or have "normal" relationships with friends, family, or any meaningful personal relationship. There is a mountain of trust issues, and perception problems.

After all that there is a heap of self-denial. Whether it is from fear of admitting the truth, or being so used to that way of life for so long it becomes the new normal.

And there's usually one often more self-destructive addictions. Prostitutes do strongly desire acceptance from others, but the only people who "accept" their self-destructive addictions are those who seek to take advantage of them in exchange for enabling their self-destructive addictions. Then it's a battle of perceptions. When there is one group who accepts you for who you are, versus another group who constantly wants to change who you are...

This thread reminded me that I saw the fakest prostitutes off campus today. The police station was just a few hundred years away, cops are always on patrol, and they were wearing the skankiest clothing possible loitering in a 7-11 parking lot. I can't imagine that they caught a single John like that.

Part of the reason it's so desperate and degrading in the US is that it's illegal. Most of Europe is much more tolerate of prostitution which means it's less of a trade dominated by drug addicts & trafficking victims (although I'm not naive, I know that even with legal prostitution there are plenty of those in the business.)

I used to date a girl who'd worked as an escort in the past. I never questioned her about why she did it but while money played a part I think she also sort of enjoyed it. She certainly had her issues but she wasn't a drug addict or some desperate teenage runaway. I also used to assume that guys who hired hookers were either total losers who couldn't get laid or men trying to bang a woman who'd be out of their league otherwise. She said that the majority of her clients seemed like the types who could've dated a woman if they'd wanted to but preferred to get laid without the hassle. To each their own I suppose.
