Most prostitutes come from broken families, alcoholic parents, or drug using parents, many were either abandoned by one or both of their parents, many were sexually abused at a young age.
But what keeps them in the prostitution business is very complex. They usually lack the social skills to hold a "normal" job, or have "normal" relationships with friends, family, or any meaningful personal relationship. There is a mountain of trust issues, and perception problems.
After all that there is a heap of self-denial. Whether it is from fear of admitting the truth, or being so used to that way of life for so long it becomes the new normal.
And there's usually one often more self-destructive addictions. Prostitutes do strongly desire acceptance from others, but the only people who "accept" their self-destructive addictions are those who seek to take advantage of them in exchange for enabling their self-destructive addictions.
