What is it that you look for in music, that makes you like it? Melody, lyrics, pace..?

I don't like most of the music other people around me like. The song threads people start on here have bands completely foreign to me because I don't listen to those radio stations, just don't enjoy them enough.

Music that sounds good at ridiculously high decibels. Bach and Mozart sound good loud. Certain DJs sound good loud. N Sync and Britney Spears....do not.

edit: well, I suppose they don't sound good at any decibel, but yeah.

The "entire package". You have to be able to turn it up to 11, turn out the lights, sit back, close your eyes, relax, and become one with the music; physically, emotionally and mentally. Physically, it has to seem to "surround" you - and I don't mean in a surround sound sense. You don't even need two speakers for this to be possible. Emotionally, it has to do SOMETHING powerful to you. Mentally, there has to be enough depth to the music for your mind to "float" in it.

It's hard to explain...

im going with eyemwing, what makes you like music is probably the hardist thing i can think of to describe.

i guess it would be 'the sound' that every individual is attracted too.

kind of like snow flakes, probably no two people like the exact same music collection/library.

for me its not to hard, not to soft, not to fast, not to slow. clear clean and loud is how i like it. the best music i find i don't like right away. if i do like it right away i get bored of it to fast. it has to be one of thoes things that one day after listening to whatever it is for the 100th time you find something new that just makes you feel different, for some reason that 100th time makes you like it a little more. it makes you want to play the song 100 more times.

i think types of music can be organized into the 'emotion' each song creates, while the genre or structure of the actual peice can be classifed as rock, classical etc etc

I agree. Good music touches you in some fashion, brings out some emotional response.

Melodies that my mind resonates with - the music just kind of fills you. I can't really narrow it down because the genres/paces my favorite music is from are too varied. Though most of what I listen to is pure music ie without lyrics. eg classical, instrumental, techno etc.

Not sure what causes me to listen to music either, but I enjoy listening to different genre of music at different times, anything from Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rhythm&Blues, Hard Rock, and even Instrumental. But somehow I can't seem to enjoy Rap -- perhaps I'm getting a bit old.

I have a simple rule. The songs must be at least 10 minutes long and must contain at least 3 or 4 guitar solos, 2 drum solos, 2 bass solos and 3 synth solos with all instruments cramming at least 100000000 notes per measure. It also must have at least 20 key changes and odd time signatures placed in odd timings with heaps of melodic and harmonic changes over themes. Must not contain a peep of vocals. I hate vocals.

The songs must be at least 11 minutes long and must contain at least 4 or 5 guitar solos, 3 drum solos, 3 bass solos and 4 synth solos with all instruments cramming at least 100000001 notes per measure. Can contain vocals as long as they don't mess shlt up. they usually mess shlt up.

The song Wicked Games by Chris Isaak is one of those few songs that for some reason almost gives me chills. The guitar, with its heavy reverb, his almost haunting lyrics. Hmm...I really don't know how to say it. The guitar part after he sings..."with you," always sounds so beautiful.

I like too many weird genres to figure out what I like. Driving home today I was listening to Aaron Copeland, yesterday to Toby Keith, and the day before that to the Moody Blues. I think that I just plain like music.

For me it's all about the lyrics and the beat of the song. I can't pick a song based solely on one or the other. Also, because I love to sing, a song's singability (not a word and I don't care ;)) makes a difference. :)

When it comes to more classical type music I'm not really sure why I like some of it over others. You can feel certain music move through you and it just makes you visualize and feel things. It's hard to explain.
