I'm using an Asus 1000HE

I'm about to take a 13 hour+ plane ride and want to use my netbook to watch movies in divx format. I was wondering since my pc uses a regular harddrive would I be able to squeeze a little more battery life out of it if I watched the movies off a thumbdrive? Or should I keep the movies on the harddrive and watch it from there?

I thought I'd try posting my question in OT since I'm more an OT kinda guy... and like the instant gratification.

Many planes have a way to power your computer on long distance flights these days.

yeah but that Highlights magazine would only kill 2 hours... boy that Goofus!

Look through Skymall. Imagine you have $1000 and you're going on a shopping spree. With all that cash you could get a wall atlas and a clip-on book light.

As for your laptop predicament, just experiment at home. Run a movie both ways and see how much the battery drains each time. Then once you find your storage method, try multiple codecs to find which consumes the least battery (CPU usage)

You have to realize it doesn't count if you are alone and for most people here it usually takes less then two minutes.

The main hard drive is still working during all operation, because it had the swap file and if you are playing video I can almost promise that it will be used frequently.
Would actually use slightly less power to not have the thumb drive in.

The big one is turning down your screen brightness a bit. That can save tons of power. Also, check your settings to make sure it isnt going into standby after 5 minutes of battery usage. Booting up or restoring from standby all the time is annoying and will use more power than if you left it running.

I'd remove the HD, and boot to Linux on the SD card. Use a thumb drive to store your media, and that's about as good as it gets. You can also disable unused devices in BIOS(camera, wifi, NIC...)

Actually, FS/FT probably accounts for a good portion, but those aren't really discussions.

you do realise that you can buy a good book for about 30 or 40 dollars, save the hassle of stripping down your lappy to full economic mode....

You guys do realise that there is such a think as books....?

Yea, maybe. I like the multipurpose nature of a netbook though. You can listen to music, read ebooks, and surf the web. If you're so inclined, work can even be done with them :^D
