I don't mind taxes on gas, oil, natural gas, coal, nonrenewable fuels in general, and alcohol and other recreational drugs. I also would approve a gas guzzler tax on new vehicles that get less than 30 mpg combined (my car is rated below that level, but it's old enough to vote.) Nonrenewable fuels are by definition non-sustainable and must be replaced with renewables. At the state level gas taxes are the singular most efficient method of paying for road maintenance, since most vehicle induced damage to roads is done by vehicles over 6000 pounds, while vehicles under 2000 pounds do negligible damage to the roads. At the federal level an oil and gas import duty would be more efficient than a gas tax since that would only tax the non-renewable portion while improving investment opportunities for renewable alternatives.
There is a persistent urban legend that the gas tax here was spent on something other than roads, I've never seen any evidence to support that myth.
I hate paying taxes on food, which is taxed in Missouri.
