my hangup with shelter dogs is that it seems like such a crapshoot in terms of personality/disposition and even how big they might grow to, as opposed to dogs that have been specifically bred for certain personalities and sizes.

Plenty of shelters and rescues have purebreed dogs and also foster dogs which allow them to observe a dogs temperament.

Dude down the street from me has a Great Dane, I dunno if he's a typical one but it's the laziest dog in the world. The guy has a 1/2 acer back yard and the dog will do nothing but lay on the back porch. I've heard they're not active dogs usually. This dog hates to go on walks and pretty much eats, shits and sleeps. Big or not it would probably make a good Condo Pooch.

they can be lazy if they want to be. they're just like humans. if you take them to the dog park, they will be active. if you keep them around the house, they'll be lazy.

they're smarter than hell. they learn fast and they can "think," if that makes sense. i swear, a lot of times, when i tell her to do something or play with her or have her in my face trying to get my attention, you can see that she's clearly thinking... like, there are human-like thoughts in her head. you gotta be a dane owner to understand what i'm talking about. it's way different than any other dog.

But from what I know about them, while they'll have fun running around, they don't really mind staying in doors. Where my neighbor 2 houses down has a Weimeriner(sp?) that dog would go absolutely ape shit if it had to be cooped up in a Condo all day. Lazy isn't an option for her lol. If I was in a condo like OP I'd be torn, I really don't like small dogs enough to have one, and wouldn't want a big ass dog that was depressed because it has to be indoors while I was at work.

Size is not related to the activity level of a dog A Basenji, Jack Russell Terrier, even a Corgi would go ape shit in a condo if they weren't properly exercised.

My 110lb Ridgeback only uses my backyard to do his business and would rather sleep on the couch when I'm at work.

Many sighthounds (ie. Greyhounds that can get upwards of 100lbs) are the biggest couch potatoes you'll ever meet. I live in the city and I meet people at the dog park with all different types of breeds of dogs. As long as they are able to get plenty of exercise, most any dog will be fine in a condo/apt situation.

A Boxer.

Our boy lives in a 1100 sq/ft apartment. He is crate trained. Very layed back and has a chill personality however you can get him riled up so that he starts boxing and jumping around, 😀. A real fun dog.

A great dane would be way too big for a condo. And yes, they are prone to health problems.

Danes need a 3'x6' space - your couch! They are excellent condo dogs.

Most common health problems typically include hip dysplasia, stomach torsion and arthritis when they're older.

Good advice. Dogs have personalities and you want one who will be happy in the setting you'll be providing.

I have two English Springer Spaniels and I love them, however they are sporting dogs and need a lot of running around outdoor time.

You'd never want to subject one to normal condo life.

tough question, there are so many great breeds.
I have a Shar Pei right now. He is really independent which is great for me but affectionate when he wants to be. I like Shepards a lot and would take a Shepard mix if there was a nice one at the pound. Good luck finding a great dog.

We just got a labradoodle from a friend's litter. They are pretty cool dogs, but damn, puppies are annoying. She's finally house broken after six months but she still tries to chew everything in site. When she gets better with the "come" command, I'll bring her to the dog park.
