Every vehicle I've ever owned (and that's quite a few), has had a V8. All but two were as quiet as I could possibly make them, and my current "Sunday car" has dual exhausts.
 
Dang, wish I had my truck here...91 Chevy, 350 w/ street rod low profile headers, no cat, flowmaster 2 chamber Force One, 3" straight pipe the rest of the way...it sounds good
