What does Windows 10 not understand about "defer upgrades"?

It decides to put up a window saying it's scheduled the installation of a patch on its own despite "defer upgrades".

Uhm, "Defer Upgrades", is just that... UPGRADES. Like from Anniversary Edition, to Creator's Edition. It DOES NOT mean "defer patches".

Upgrades and updates are different.

After forcing an update this morning, this afternoon it uploaded yet another patch on its own, saying it needed to in order to install security patches.

So, after it downloaded it I powered off with an install of the patch and powered on, and the PC wouldn't boot with an OS error.

I did a repair from the USB stick with the OS, and it said it couldn't repair - only option was reinstall the OS.

Instead, I powered off, removed the USB stick, and powered on and it booted fine. This same thing happened before when it forced a patch
installation. Of course, then it showed an error saying 'patch not installed'. So, matter of time it'll force it again and repeat this garbage.

Well, you can "schedule" your updates during 'off' hours, but that is all they let you do now.
I had it set for 3AM (max hours it would let me), and it forced shut down my VM. I was PO'ed.

You could always run the upgrade, which will probably react better to the update.

Unfortunately the other posters are spot-on. I got caught by this one as well when MS pushed the original Threshold 2 (November) update. Defer allows you to sit out for a couple of months if you want to let other people work out all of the kinks. But it's not permanent, and at some point Microsoft will force the update. Ultimately the rolling release system means that MS doesn't continue releasing patches for old versions of Windows 10, so they need to get people off of them both to ensure they're on a currently supported version of the OS, and keep the release window rolling forward.

At least now you can set the defer time to at max 1 year in the Creators update (1703) before it was only a box that you selected and it did not give you at time.

Another reason to use one of the BSDs or Linux as they don't force you to do anything you want to do. So what happens if you have "unsupported hardware" and you can't upgrade to the Creators update when the year up?

Pretty much yes and unfortunately it has already appeared. Pretty much any CloverTrail atom systems cannot upgrade to Creators or newer unless Intel or Imagination Tech release drivers for the GPU for it.

But at least they will get the updates till 2023.

Same every time. It just shut down on its own to update, and lost information that hadn't been saved. Then as always it hangs during the update, and I power cycle and it rolls back and hangs again and then after another power cycle runs fine.

Sometimes it won't boot, and I have to do an OS repair, which it says doesn't complete, but it fixes the problem despite that.

So I can expect to just keep having to do this until I get whatever causes it to hang fixed, and I have no idea when that would be. I don't want to spend hundreds on a new CPU and more on a installation service this time to test the theory that would fix it.

After that mess - now it's going to force a reboot again in an hour. What a great design.

So you just can't defer updates.
Only on the enterprise versions.
What a crappy design.
You're rather late to the party, aren't you?:p It's exactly that, as well as the excessive default telemetry, that (almost) everyone who cares about this sort of thing has been bitching about, early and often, since Win10 was first introduced...

Yup. I don't usually complain about Windows. Damn monopoly for gamers.

Well not so much any more as Linux has become a viable platform for games thanks to Valve and GOG.com. And it is getting better as well.

I don't complain about it (much...;)) just for something to complain about, but the incredibly irritating forced updates (given MS's habit of not infrequently releasing ones that break stuff) and the extreme telemetry are pretty big bones to pick, afaic. I mean, I wouldn't even care if they set the default to auto-update and made one dig into the registry to change it, but to prevent the non-enterprise versions from even deferring them at all is pretty freaking annoying...

It has a lot of games, but what percent are available on Linux?

I still games I play with posts from angry Linux users saying they want it ported so that's a problem.

For now. But yeah that is a problem with some of the popular titles are not available on Linux, but ever since Valve released Steam on Linux there have been a huge flood of games with more coming.

Yup. If the issue were just 'can I get good games on Linux', it'd be great.

But I don't like any game not being on the platform.

You might have some luck with Wine. I use it to play Windows games from GOG.com

And speak of the devil, Microsoft has now pushed out Creators Update to everyone who had been deferring it. So now you have to take it.
