What does upping the resolution do in games?

Sorry if this is a super newb question, but I am very confused as to what upping the resolution does in games? If someone could please explain me why I should up it, that would be great!
Thanks!

🙁... Could someone please give me a little bit more detailed answer? I was thinking that maybe it makes everything smaller, thus making stuff less jagedy and have more detail, but I am not sure 😕

A higher screen resolution means more stuff can fit on the screen and thus there is more room for detail. The down side is that your GPU/VPU has to pass more data to the screen and thus only more powerful vid cards can run higher resolutions at acceptable frame rates.

What Viper (Charmin, or Northern?) is saying is true in a nutshell - It makes it look better.

So would upping the resolution make Halo PC less jagedy? :disgust:

Upping the res means you're having more pixels drawn on the screen, which means a more detailed picture. At 1024x768 there are 1024 pixels being drawn horizontally and 768 vertically, for a total of 786,432 pixels.

According to that article though that was posted earlier in this thread, upping resolution has no effect what-so-ever on LCDs... someone please tell me I misunderstood the article 🙁

I think they are referring to the fact that LCD's have a native resolution, and at resolutions other that 1/2x and 2x the native resolution the image is degraded to the point that increased resolution does not make the image look better.

Making the resolution higher makes your GPU create an image made with more pixels.

Pros:
Less jaggies
Sharper image
Less scan-lines

Cons:
Less performance

is halo any worth playing? ive heard its just nothing like the xbox and not worth it...

There's a demo for Halo out...download and try it.

Higher resolutions in 3D games remove aliasing, line/edge rolling, moire, texture shimmering, make objects at long distances clearer and more accurate and generally just sharpen the entire scene.

Makes everything Smaller yet more detailed and makes your eyesight get worse
3D objects and properly interpolated 2D objects are always exactly the same size, regardless of the resolution.

I never played the XBox version. The PC version is very repetitive. I feel like I've gone through the same part of the level 6 times. Then I finally beat that level, and I go through the next one 6 times 🙂 The level designers must have really loved copy and paste.

That and the gameplay isn't that great. All you do is mindlesly shoot stuff, reload, shoot, reload, die, do it all over again blah blah blah. No where near as fun as Max Payne 2, or Call of Duty, which are the two other newest games I have played.

Think of the resolution like a grid on your screen. The higher the resolution, the smaller each square in the grid is, allowing for finer detail and/or more stuff on the screen because the size of the screen itself hasn't changed.

Thanks for the answers everyone 😀.
But I now have another question sort of on the same topic... are tv's similar to monitors? If I buy a HDTV and hook up my xbox through a HDTV pack, will alot of the jaggies in RS3 disappear? Thanks in advance😕

lol, how many more answers do you need?🙂

The higher the resolution means the image on screen will be sharper, more defined, and far clearer. So in effect, yes, the graphics will appear better.

How exactly does high resolution hurt your eyes? Low resolution hurts my eyes due to scan lines.
