Motheboard Monitor showed my CPU usage at 100% while my system should have been idle. When I checked Windows Task Manager in noticed two processes running:

Outlook.exe - running around 32% CPU utilization
lsass.exe - running around 68% CPU utilization

Outlook 2k had been closed previously, so I don't know what was up with that, and I have no idea what the other task is. When I did a search for the file name it came up in C:\WINDOWS\system32

Was it Outlook archiving messages, or is something else up? Any help would be appreciated. BTW, after a reboot, everything is fine. I even opened and closed Outlook 2k and sent a message, but the flakiness never showed back up.

Running WinXP Pro from a clean install.

Thanks in advance

Outlook rarely shuts down properly - Outlook2K or Outlook2002. It always seems to hang around until you kill it or just ignore it like I do.

if i'm not mistaken, lsass is the win32 subsystem of nt/2k/xp. the kernel runs on a different model than win32, and this program executes all the win32 code. so it is rather important. u won't be able to kill it if you tried, it's a kernel process.

Thanks all!

I guess it was just Outlook 2k hogging system resources due to a botched shutdown. I had gotten an error message on send/receive, so I shut down Outlook and tried again. Send/receive was successful, but I guess Outlook was still processing something in background.

Hasn't occurred since.
