I don't get much emotion from him though. He may well be watching a documentary on TV.

The man has a pipe, but lacks hands with which to stroke his chin.

He cannot therefore strike the wisely ruminative pose he so dearly desires. This frustrates him, as does the fact that his hair is receding.
 
Looks like a guy behind mini blinds. Emotionally, makes me think of the hollywood depiction of a private-eye's office. Perhaps it's the color scheme.
 
Looks pretty blank to me. Can't tell if the stare is a staredown, i.e. challenge, without body posture. Could be a momentary blank of incredulousness.

Really, that face shows quite the absence of muscular contractions. (just one eyebrow slightly drawn down.) You can't narrow it to a specific positive mood from an absence of positive reaction.
