What does this beep code mean??

I'm setting up an old computer with some new parts. The motherboard is a Vega 694X Socket 370 with a Celeron 500 proc.

When I boot up it gives me long equal length beep codes with a short pause between each one.

I looked in the little peice of paper(booklet) that came with the mobo and it has nothing about beep codes.

What could it be?

I've tested the new parts that I got, hard drive, vid card and RAM, in another system and they work fine.

I'm starting to think its the motherboard or CPU.

Would it give me beep codes if something was wrong with the processor?

I haven't used the processor for a long time and it has a lot of dried on thermal paste on it, but it did work the last time I took it out (2 years ago).


Someone please provide some input.

Well if you've troubleshooted the other parts... might be your CPU then. I was going to say your RAM since thats usually what it is but you said you isolated that already.

One long beep is either a memory or video problem. Does the system have on board video, and if so, does it work? Older mobo's had a jumper to change from on-board to add-on video. Lastly, what exact kind of memory are you attempting to use? Most modern PC-133 will not work properly in that system.

Well, its a long beep, but not just one. It reloops the long beep over and over.
It doesn't have onboard video, the only jumper settings I need to worry about are the fsb and cpu mulitplier, and they are set correctley.

Hmm, the memory is 256mb PC133. Do you think thats the problem? I think I ran PC133 in there before.
And I thought PC133 should run fine at lower speeds...

Old PC-133 usually works fine, but the newer sticks will either not be seen at all, or once in a while will show as half the size. PC-100 would work too, assuming you can find any. Or even 6ns SDRAM, but you'd need to change the bus speed to 66Mhz, and the performance would be seriously impacted.

The FSB is set at 66mhz for this system. CPU multiplier is 7.5. So 7.5x66=495mhz. Thats the celeron 500.
So I better try some new RAM?

Dang and I just bought this stick... I dont even have any old memory sitting around.

I looked on that beep code site, it has an award bios and there are only 4 options on the award bios. And non of them are continious long beeps.

The only one that has continuous beeps is the IBM bios.

On the troubleshooting flowchart I dont really know what it means when it asks "power diagnostic done?".

I dont think it could be the power supply.
