what does the "source" mean after Half Life and Counterstrike?

I believe that they are ports of the original Half Life and Counterstrike running on the new Half Life 2 engine.

The new game engine produced by Valve is called Source

Half-Life: Source, and Counter-Strike: Source are remakes of the original games on the new game engine.

It's kind of a "buzzword" that they're using on product names to keep all those made on the Source engine together.

Confused

lol! omgwtfbbq! oic!

Half Life: Source is the name of what is being shipped along with Half Life 2. It's a port of the original Half Life into the new Half Life 2 engine. The engine that is called "Source".

It's amazing how many people have not answered by answering. What is signified by "Source"? The "source" of many dollars for Valve?!? I'm curious too.

It's just a name. Like the Jupiter engine from LithTech for No One Lives Forever 2 (which was not programmed on the planet Jupiter or under the guidance of the god Jupiter), or the Dark Engine of Thief, the Dark Project (which was not programmed in the dark or kept in the dark to mislead the competition).
It's just a name.
Just a name.
Just a name.

Edit: Forgot the 2 for NOLF, dunno what the engine for the first one was called.

Ever heard of a term "codename"?

So with Half Life 2 we'll be able to replay a new Half Life, in case we forgot the story plot?

Yes, A new Half Life in terms of having the Half Life 2 Engine and graphics

The only way you can get HL:Source via Retail shelves is to buy the Collectors Edition. The baisc retail package only has HL2 and CS:S

On Steam, the Silver and Gold packags have HL:S as well as DOD:S too !

I really wish they would unlock Half-Life:S early so we could play it again before HL2 is unlocked

lol its not called half life source

What are you talking about ??

That is a little misleading. Yes, Half-Life: Source will use the HL2 engine, but most of the graphics were not updated as they were for CS:Source. CS:S was completely overhauled when they migrated it to the new engine. Valve has said before they didn't spend nearly the amount of time porting HL.

So its possible to get these "Source" versions off of steam? My steam has been acting up on my pc/univ network connection, so I haven't been on it in a weeks.
