what does the "sleep" feature on TVs, VCRs, etc., do?

Hence the name "sleep" and not "sleep or something else"

turns it off in the specified time, so if you go off to sleep, it doesn't stay on all night

What else do you want it to do, take the garbage out? I use it every night, set it for an hour when Cheers starts and fall asleep somewhere in the middle.
