IIRC, it's one of McCartney's favorite guitars he ever owned and dates back to early Beatle days.
As already pointed out, Epiphone was not always Gibson's trash brand -- it's only fairly recently that it became synonymous with "Made in Korea." And FWIW, the Korean guitars have improved dramatically in just the last few years, but they still don't have as much detail and finishing put into them compared to high end American models, let alone the quality of the woods and electronics.
