What does the period indicate exactly?

There's a folder in the home directory ".name" that doesn't show up. I have to type the name in the location bar to get to it. I'm assuming it means hidden but is that all it indicates.

Ultimately, I want to get it unhidden. Just wondering the period has anything to do with it before I get to screwin with it.

yes, indeed, a period in front of a folder name denotes that it should generally be hidden

usually if its in the /home/$USER folder, its used for configuration data for something.
you should be able to change your view options in your file manager to show the hidden files.

Also, if you don't want to see all your hidden folders (there are a lot in /home/$USER/), you can make a visible symbolic link to that folder only.
