What does the "messages" column mean when browsing PM's?

I'm browsing through my private messages & I see numbers in the "messages" column that seem to have absolutely no relation to the number of messages I have with that user.

It's almost as if it's showing me how many PM's that user has stored.

For example, one user who I have only a dozen or so messages with had 1168 in the "messages" column before I sent him another, now his name shows 1169.

Is that intentional?

It may be the amount of PMs that person has within his mailbox.

I noticed that I have a Pm history person that show 1169 also.

And a history that show 88 when I have no PMs with the person currently at all.

That's exactly what I think its doing.

My guess is the intent is to show how many messages you currently have with that person.

Or to ensure that you do not get selfish and flood that person's mailbox.

Or to show you if that person is over their inbox limit to explain why they're not replying to you :p

It is the total amount of PM's that user has.
