I've worked professionally as a software engineer since 02. I've had 4 interviews in that time, and 4 job offers. GOOD sotware engineers are in huge demand. All the talk of outsourcing has probably scared people away from this field, which means $$$ for me, especially since it's impact is extremely overblown.

I get recruiting letters 2-3 times per month begging me to come work for XYZ as a paramedic. I also work in the Emergency Room of a local hospital, and believe me, there is definitely a shortage of all types of skilled health-care workers....

I don't make the usual ATOT $100k, but it's nice being in demand....

That's exactly the kind of focus I hope my next job has -- VMWare and Linux.

RBS is going to shed a lot of ABN Amro people, JPM is going to let go 5k+ Bear Stearns people.

Not great.

Yeah, Morgan Stanley let me know that they're frozen all hiring processes in Hong Kong even though they were processing my application. So far the only place I see growth is the Calgary oil/commodities market, but even then they are hiring at about 2-3 a month. Boutique shops don't even bother.

I don't have to worry about being outsourced because of rules and regulations <have to be US citizen, can't do our job remotely from oversea>.

As a matter of fact, we need more people in our field to catch the bad guys due to SOX regulations and firms like Enron.

What he said. With ICE ramping up eligibility inspections and CBP increasingly making surprise C-TPAT checks, we're definitely in demand. I just had a requisition for 2 more direct subordinates signed even though we're laying off about 50 Ees.

Law Enforcement is always hiring. :)

3 dispatching positions needed at my PD. Full staff on officer though...give it two years, and I would say we will hire 5-7 more.

And to all those companies purchasing VMware software, purchase more and encourage others to purchase. I need to buy a house soon. ;)

I just started as a software engineer and the group of new hires was friggin' huge, twice as big or more as usual they said. A friend of mine is starting next month at the same place with another group (and some hires probably come in between that).

There are always openings, but jobs with the same job title have totally different job descriptions. o_O

mine is very company specific. while we have a ton of work backlogged, another systems integrator has people deserting it like rats off a burning ship. i have little doubt that i could find a job quickly if i were to lose this one.

Not great.

I received word that JPM will is only accepting ~47% of BSC employees.
The rest will have to find jobs elsewhere.

I'll graduate in 2011 with a BFA in Graphic Design. I have some good networking opportunities and I'm shooting to have a very strong portfolio. Hopefully I'll be able to get a job doing SOMETHING graphic design related... I like packaging design and things related to marketing, so hopefully I'll be able to do that.

Seeing as I have a number of years of IT experience, lets just say I decided to get out of the market. Here in AL, there aren't really that many decent positions available that include benefits. So, I'm continuing on to get my masters in applied math (same field as my undergraduate). Hopefully I'll be able to actually get a job in my field when I get out sometime next year, if I don't continue on for even more.

I ended up leaving for a couple reasons (talk of the firm closing because of finances; plus I was itching to travel out of the country for the first time). I took 8 months, and somehow during that time the market tanked. I came back and places that called me for an interview had to drop the positions. The state's cut about 300 court jobs and most places around here advertising positions have been swamped with applicants.

So I've been unemployed for 3 months and have been seriously considering going to Asia to teach English for a while (no problem finding work there), as a last resort. I'm trying not to think about why I spent $50K on a law degree to teach something I could've done with my bachelor's (enough things keeping me awake at night).

I'm not much of a drinker but I think I need a

you only spent $50K for a law degree????? wtf I hate my school.

I'd probably be pretty fracked if I got fired... 5 years experience, but no certs and my job is pretty narrow (once a server is online, my job more or less stops... I'm strictly a hardware guy).

I've got another 5 years experience in customer service, though, I'm sure I could find something.

In that regard I guess I got lucky. It was $50K for 3 years at UF including all living expenses. It would have really sucked if I come out of a 4th tier school like Florida Coastal with $150K of debt.
