I'm watching Armin Van Buuren's Imagine:music: DVD right now and hes playing a live set in some euro city. it seems like he just stands there while the guest singers come in and sing his tunes, does he do anything besides fade in/out songs and bob his head and jump around ?

either way, his new cd kicks ass and i really want to go to one of his shows

What exactly should he be doing? Its not like a rock concert where he's actually playing an instrument.

I don't know about Van Buren, but I know Daft Punk does a lot of their stuff on the fly. It's really cool to watch, especially if you're interested in the technology behind it.

Step 1: Be Eurotrash
Step 2: Cradle headphone in ear and same shoulder
Step 3: Bobble up and down for 3 hours

Well, he probably doesn't do much other than tweaking the EQ and mixing songs. Check out Infected Mushroom's live stuff if you want to see some movement and actual playing.

Typical trance is light on the tricks and mixing. They go from one anthem to the next.

A good DJ will judge the crowd and play the right track at the right time. So I guess you would have more fun with a better DJ.

I used to spin house, and occasionally spun sets of my friends' trace records. Mixing isn't really that involved once you get the beat-matching down. You have to know you're tracks well enough to know the points in one song to begin the next one, and how to gracefully exit one track while introducing the next one and keeping the beat the whole time.

From a external, visual perspective, there isn't much to it. Famous DJ's find ways to be more involved and creative with their mixes, and work in custom loops with samplers, and even custom presses of popular songs.

EDIT: Terrence Parker is awesome
