You need to go into your profile (click button), select personal options tab, and enable "enhanced mode." [/b]If you are on a slow connection, choose the Standard Graphics mode to decrease download times.[/b]

Standard disables the smiles and other emoticons. Enhanced mode Slows it down a bit over dialup but not too bad, imo.
