"Rack rate" just means the standard room rate with no discounts, like for student, military, AARP, etc.

That's because the rack rate is the general public rate without any sort of discount. Don't ever pay rack rate; find a hotel discount agency to book rooms with. You'll find lots of them online but it depends on your destination.

The only way you should ever have to pay the "rack rate" is when you are in a blizzard, the next-closest hotel is 50 miles away, and you have no choice but to stop for the night at the hotel you are in front of.

Even if you call them on your cell phone from the hotel parking lot to ask for a room price, you'll get a better deal than the rack rate. Do you have an AAA card? Always ask for the AAA rate if you have no other discount options available. Nine of out ten times it will get you some break, unless you're going somewhere that's going to be sold out for some event.

Ya. The

was because you used Urban Dictionary.

Urban Dictionary is awesome, however that page does not have the definition of rack rate.

What's been said is accurate. I used to do reservations for Marriott. I was told that the rack rate was the rate that we told customers a room would cost when there weren't any rooms. It was kind of a made-up rate that they stuck in there, I never saw it actually come up in the reservation system. Ever looked on the back of your hotel door at the rate sheet, and noticed that the prices it listed were way higher than what you paid? That's the rack rate.
