If you want to feel young again - try DHEA .

Maybe some pantothenic acid (B5) too.

Middle age nowadays is probably 45-55. 40 seems too young for middle age in 2019, since most people seem to live to around 90 now unless cancer gets them.

I'm suddenly reminded of how David Attenborough defined "middle-aged: ampler [fatter], less violent, more sluggish, and richer."

Of course, he was talking about a river, but it seems pretty apt to me.

I think the average life span is something like 75, so:

0-24: Young
25-50: Middle aged
51+: Old

I'm thinking that the people who asserted middle age / old to be a certain figure should reveal their ages :)

My problem is defining when middle age ends and old begins. My dad was old at age 40. He abused his body with alcohol and cigarettes and was dead at age 70. My father-in-law doesn't drink or smoke, is 76 and this man is a firecracker, going off everywhere. The man can't sit still for a second and is always on the go. I'm 56 and 5' 9" (I know, a manlet), don't drink alcohol or smoke, I exercise regularly and got to my target weight of 145 lbs. During my physical last month my blood pressure was 110 over 69, and all of my blood work came back great. My wife and I did a ~10 mile hike at a local state park last weekend, and I felt great and wasn't really even tired the next day.

So I guess what I'm saying is that maybe defining whether people are middle aged or old should be based on their physical well being as well as their mental attitude.

For the real answer, you have to know your expiration date. Granted, the older you get, the closer you can estimate. Guy in the obits today, his middle age was 26 and didn't have a clue.

I can take a guess based on family history. By 70-72 I should be well on my way to dementia, dead by 75 completely unaware of the world.

It means age discrimination by one's employer. Sure, discrimination based on age is supposed to be illegal, but that doesn't stop them from doing it. My employer is big on it.

I'm 48 and feel old. I just want to retire and be done with working.

I'm 50 now and starting to feel it physically. Mentally and attitude I feel much younger, until I walk past a mirror and do a double take because I think I see my father reflected in it. I'm afraid of being on the downside of my middle aged years.

The year my dad turned 48 (my current age), I turned 21. By the time my mom turned 48, I was out of college and in grad school. Some of my high school classmates are already grandparents. I am married and have no kids, but I'm just so tired and want to be done with a career I care little about so I can do something that interests me.

My last employer didn't even hide their desire to hire millennials. That was their big push. Even still, I made a mistake leaving them for this consulting gig. I realize that more and more every day.....

It means time goes faster-and-faster to the point where it's barely worth doing anything or worrying about anything, because you only have to sit down for a few minutes and you'll be pensionable-age by the time you get up again.

Clearly time speeds up after 30 because its always faster when you are going downhill.

Middle aged to me means wearing socks all day long. I can't go barefoot anymore or my feet dry up and crack.

Why would you wear socks in the shower?

Why would you wear socks when swimming?
