What does "Lapped" Mean?

See subject title. It has to do with HSF's right? Would I want to Lap my HSF(Taisol 760 on athlon 1.4), whatever that means...thanks!

Lapping is the process of flattening and polishing. Basically it improves contact with the chip and therefore improves thermal transfer. I didn't bother lapping my TaiSol CGK 760032 because I thought it was already flat and polished enough. To improve on that finish you would have to get sand paper upwards of 1000 grit.
