What does it take to stop a 7.62x39?

Also, a 12 gauge shotgun slug? I want to fire some ammo into a big stack of phonebooks/newspaper, and I'm wondering how thick it should be. I'm not looking for a gelatin reproduction, just cheap stopping power with little/no deformation to the ammo. Should I wet the phonebooks/newspaper?

Swimming pool. (just make sure you shoot in at an angle and use the deep end)

Yes, wetting the phonebooks will reduce the number of books the rounds tear through. A slug is a large, relatively slow moving round so it shouldn't deform too much. The 7.62 however is going to mushroom a bit.

Have your target holder hold a wet phone book in front of their chest/target area. Test it out. If results /=satisfactory, then try two wet phonebooks.

No pool available. The sandbag is a great idea though, I just hope it doesn't deform the bullet too much. I want to take some home and put them on my dresser And I'll let my friend fire the 12 gauge slugs...

depends on the bullet. Is it a FMJ? HP? Steel core? What is it?

depends on the bullet. Is it a FMJ? HP? Steel core? What is it?

Well it's some AK-47 variant, so I'm guessing it's just a standard 7.62x39 FMJ.

I'd say 5 or 6 2" or greater phone books held together tightly. The bullet will expand some though.

If I put some spacing between the sandbags would that reduce mushrooming? I plan to wet some phonebooks, put some wet newspaper in front of it, and a nice long sandbag in front of that.

Sigh, as in something actually fired from a gun and recovered. It puts a story behind a bullet sitting on my dresser. Sure, it's not like it was in a war or something, but I didn't go out and buy it either.
