So, I've been trying to get my birth certificate updated for a year...my mom left the whole father portion blank, and I can't get my DL without a birth certificate, and all my other documents have my dads last name attached to mine, and not my mothers...I've sent them everything I can, and they want more...I don't talk to my mother anymore, so idk what to do...any suggestions? Would getting a paternity test done on myself and my father help?

LOL, I hated all the paper work to get a license. I had to go 100 miles to get my Birth Cert. to get my DL.

You will just need to do what the people tell you to to get the Birth Cert.

Also make sure you have your SS Card as they need that too.

A good portion of the government, law system, etc. is backwards in terms of digital contact. Many people I know, including myself, are always finding that the govt. doesn't seem to believe in email, but faxing is okay. Instead of having the entire system digitized, you've got department people and their heads always out-of-office, never answering phones, only working from noon to 3, etc. and it just slows everything down. There needs to be serious efficiency reform in the system.

I decided to change my name after getting married, so in early June I went to Social Security to start the process. I brought all the paperwork and documentation, and they gave me a confirmation, and said my new card will arrive in 6 weeks because I also had to update my birthday, since I discovered it's wrong.

It's been almost 10 weeks, and still no card. So I decide to call the lovely folks at Social Security. After navigating the phone tree from hell, the system not being able to differentiate from me saying "O" for one of the letters of my last name from "L" I finally was patched through to a very brusque human, who blitzed through confirming my info, put me on hold for 10 seconds, and then told me to wait for the new card to show up in the mail.

That's great, expect I have been waiting for the new card in the mail, and it's a month past the promised date for my new card, and that's why I'm calling you. Except I didn't get a chance to tell her all that because she hung up on me right after saying to wait for it in the mail. And I was polite. Hrmph.

Well, after all you live in Texas.
In my state you could just stroll in to the Division of Records, ask for an appointment, wait 10 minutes and a high level official would take care of your problem.

Then again, in my state they believe in providing services.

Would that be the state of denial? :)

Nope. Vermont.
One quarter I put the decimal in the wrong place when I paid my quaterly sales taxes. I thought it would be a huge hassle. I called up. No wait. The guy pulls my form. Fixes it.
Took 5 minutes.

One year I get a letter asking for another form for my state income tax. I don't understand why, but send it in anyway. A few weeks go by, no response. I call up. No wait. The guy pulls my income tax, says he will call me back. Ten minutes later he calls back. The check will arrive in 3 days.

Need a drivers license in Vermont? They have satellite offices that travel around the state. Usually a very short wait. Leave with your new picture license.

Want to quit smoking in Vermont? Call any hospital and you can enroll in the free smoking cessation classes where you get free nicotine replacement therapy. Funded by the tobacco settlement money (one of only 3 states that actually uses the money to fund quitting smoking)

It amazes me how people vote into office politicians who scream about how bad government is, how government doesn't work etc, then when they get poor government service they bitch.
Try electiong politicians who run on a platform of making government work.

You know these government people, they have no soul. I sat on the phone with a lady telling me that she couldn't help me and that the lady that could had already leaft for the day. That was after I started crying, and then she proceeded to hang up on me. So I talked to my dad, and we drove to Austin, Stayed at a hotel, and went down to see the only person who could help me. She said it would be 2 hrs before I got my new birth certificate, so we went to eat. As soon as we had placed our order she called, and it was ready. For a year I waited and called, and argued with the people on the phones, and all it took was going there in person.

Just wait until we are forced to go through this bullshit to get our medicine.

Always remember that a government big enough to give you everything is also big enough to take everything from you...

When dealing with government things, you almost always need to go in person and wait in 3 hour lines. They are inefficient.

Idk if you read what I posted or not, but the last name on my birth certificate, and the last name on all my other documents were different. I understand how easy it is to just go down to the health department and get a new one, it's just hard to do when the last name on your birth certificate is a Y name and the one on your Id and SS card is a B name.

This is why functional creep is a bad thing. Rather than simply verifying that one is able to operate a vehicle safely, driver's licenses have become de facto identification cards. Here in VA I had to provide two documents proving my identity, one to prove my citizenship, and one to prove my residency... just to get a drivers license. Re-frickin-diculous.
