I'm currently assigned an assignment to write a shell with basic commands. Something random popped up into my head. I remember in some credit card trading chat rooms, people are trading "shells." What are they exactly trading and why?

i believe there is no talking about illegal things, sorry.

you should re-phrase your question/post. what is a shell?

a shell is a computer or box that people connect to using telnet and they can make your own scripts which in turn turn into bots or some thing along those lines.

im sure someone else can explain this fairly well.

It may not be totally illegal. If the sysadmin of the box the shell is on allows their users to give their accounts out to anyone (rather rare though) then there would be no illegalities in trading shells. In most cases though unfortunately it is probably illegal as the sysadmin doesn't allow it, or the shell was illegaly acquired. :(
