For me, that statement defines why I am proud to be an American and the values I believe underly that pride.

Hell, this is sappy, but so what? "This is my country, land of my birth."

I'm guessing you don't feel anything like that at all?

I always thought that was what was special about America. Your birth brings you nothing, you are neither better nor worse, nor in any way special because of who you are when you were born, but what you make yourself into.

I never really understood national pride based solely on birth.

Proud to be an American, I hope, is an emotional conclusion resulting from never having to say "I'm sorry".

Agreed.

Too bad some fundies thought differently and were compelled to change our motto to "in god we trust."

I'm proud to be an American because we are the only nation that elected a liar and an idiot into the presidency, although the "elected" part on the idiot is rather dubious... and now there seemed to be an effort to change the ammendment in order to allow the liar to enter the election in order to defeat the idiot "almost certain victory" in light of the availability of other more capable candidates...

Where I come from Pride is a deadly sin, no one likes a horn tooter.

See stickers on cars "Proud to be an American" Don't get it ..Seems more appropriate "Lucky to be an American", or "fortunate to be born on American Soil" Something but proud I don't get.

Oh well.

Where you come from is less important than where you're going. Unwarranted Pride is arrogance, no?
Justified Pride is achievement, no? I am certain you are proud to be what you are because it is warranted.
I am confident in that. I am proud to be what I am because I've earned it. Being lazy and all affords not much pride unless, like me, one is the laziest... and I am.:)

I guess it's just me then. I drive a relative new (2000) truck and have never washed it don't really care at all about appearances, never have. And certainly don't feel pride about something I have an infitesmal role in such as the country I live. I'm proud though of people I mentor, and my kids. Can't really say proud about my degrees, work it just is.

I have a '93 toyota that never gets washed because I have no interest in washing it... no one I care to impress nor does it need it to run... runs fine and I'm lazy. Your ego is not sated by what others think of you only what you think of yourself, apparently. I think this is good. But, the country you live in as seen by the world... this is differn't, I think. You are America I am America we're like the Borg. We are each the total and the part. I think. what Mr. Bush does I do where he fails I fail I want him to succeed so I succeed. I hated it when Bush the elder fell in Japan... I was embarrassed for me and for him and all Americans. I have no things on the wall, In fact, I could'nt tell you where they are. I also could care less about who gets impressed by me or does not... that's their issue.... sorta like propose and dispose... as long as I don't have to do both I'll choose to propose and let others dispose if they wish.

Interesting.

Actually, to me, the measure of a man is how many show for the wake. So yes I do care what others think just not in that way.

I will be in heaven hours before the devil knows I'm gone so wondering about who's present at my wake will not be among the pressing issues.:)

I accept all as they are, some I like some I am indiffern't toward. Never wonder about if someone thinks ill or well of me. But, am easily hurt... sensitive to mean spirited people...

I thought dust formed a protective coating which keeps the damaging suns off of the paint. ;)

blind national pride is usually a dangerous thing. I prefer to be "proud to be human" I saw someone with a flag with a picture of the earth on it, that is the kind of pride i wish more people had.

I am proud to be an American for many reasons:

1. If you work hard and don?t break the law you will succeed in this country. (American Dream)
2. The American taxpayer by way of its government gives Billions of dollars to third world countries for food and medicates to aid them
3. America is filled with the most generous people on the planet, after 911 the charities collected Billions of dollars for the family?s that were directly affected.
4. Freedom to do what you want.
So many reasons to little time, I can only thank God I was born in America even with its faults.
America is one of the only superpowers throughout History that corrects its mistakes in time. :)

Ah, isn't it refreshing? I don't mean to deride you Sternfan, but may I ask how old you are? I'd also ask of your heritage but I don't like the race game.

My point being, I too though those things were true, until I stepped into "the real world" , maybe it's because I have been inundated with scenes of horror and suffering on my tv, maybe it's because I read of the doom and gloom on this forum, or maybe it's because I see and hear double speak from those sworn to "represent" my views, or maybe it's because I see those who claim to be protecting us actually demand our obedience. Whatever the reason for my view - those 4 things you mentioned are/or could be our undoing.
1. greed
2. purchased silence
3. 3000+ humans perished
4. freedom is a "from"
While the above most certainly demand more said, to clarify reasoning - we haven't the time, energy, or will to truely understand them all.

Yet, as I speak of ultimate failure, there is truely only one thing that can save you.

Blind faith

I feel sorry for you, you try to make it sound like you are enlighened, you are just a sad little person who most likely got wronged along the path of life and did not have the strength to pull yourself out of it. Ask yourself one question, would the world be a better place with or without AMERICA. I know the answer the this question.

New here? :D

While the answer you seek is "with", the future holds the truth ;)

I am by no means "enlightened" - just ask around:p Most here think I'm a facist, right-wing, bible thumping, Bush worshiping, blind patriot. ;)

I ask you, where does your guidance come from?

Same in most other industrialized western countries.

2. The American taxpayer by way of its government gives Billions of dollars to third world countries for food and medicates to aid them

Around $6 billion a year, which is half that of Japan, and almost as much as France. Now, if you include aid to Israel, that ups it by another $3b.

3. America is filled with the most generous people on the planet, after 911 the charities collected Billions of dollars for the family?s that were directly affected.

Hardly. The rest of the world did the same, sent blood and other needed help to the US, often without thanks.

4. Freedom to do what you want.

Try sparking up a joint. Talk about the lack of fundamential individual rights.

So many reasons to little time, I can only thank God I was born in America even with its faults.

Nope, just builds on them.
