What does it look like if you use a single link dvi cable with a 30" lcd monitor?

I was just wondering what the display would look like if you use a single link cable with a monitor that requires dual link? Would anything show up at all? I'm trying to diagnose a problem with a 30" lcd my friend has and I thought maybe he has the wrong cable.

Either you will not have the option to pick 2560x1600 or you will have the option but the image will be completely distorted.

In my case, the cheap advertised "dual link" cable outputted a super thin desktop resolution when I selected 2560x1600 but a normal displayed output when at 1920x1200. The cable I used had a full DVI-D dual link layout and it had dual link printed on the side but the actual cable was only physically capable of doing single link.

Take back the cable to the store and get replacement but make sure you test it at the store if it is possible.

You just can't select anything higher than 1920x1200, so it runs at non-native resolution.

If the monitor has a scaler you'd see the full picture, if it doesn't you'd see a portion of it and you'd have to pan through it by going to the edges of the screen with the mouse.

My brother threw one of his running shoes while having a hissy fit and broke one of my 3007 Dell 30's and the pattern on the screen looked very similar to using a single link cable!

Sometimes it just flashes on and off. It cannot sync.

Look at the connectors too. If pins are missing they won't be dual link capable.

30" lg, when connecting on a single link dvi, the maximum resolution you get is 1280x800 or 1280x1024. definitely not 1920x1200 or 1680x1050

Yep, usually 30” devices top out at 1280x800 in the control panel.
