What does it all mean?

So is this a mind fvck movie. In the last 30 mins the sheriff is referred to as Anton. So is he the schizo-killer a la Identity? But that makes things not make sense at the beginning. Can anyone explain this all?

the whole movie was fcked

He realizes there is a new breed of criminal out there, and he is old school from a small town.

So he retires because "Its no country for old men" anymore. (old law enforcement men)

When Tommy Lee Jones enters the hotel room, Chigur is inside, but does nothing to him. TLJ is irrelevant.

That one little scene sums it up I think.

Thats what I thought too but -

I've been reading some reviews and they say that:
(in this order)
1. The mexicans got to moss at the motel and killed him, but couldn't find the money.
2. The cops come and investigate the crime scene.
3. Chigurh comes to claim the money, knowing that Moss would rent adjoining rooms. So he blows the bolts on both rooms (supposedly you can see it in a single shot of the movie - I missed that ) and goes into the vents to find the money.
4. Chigurh hears someone coming and hides. The Sheriff makes a choice to enter one of the rooms and enters the empty one.
5. Presumably Chigurh gets the money - and pays off the kid at the end with the $100 bill.

They do not refer to the Sheriff as Anton.

I'm quite sure they do. The other sheriff at the coffee shop calls him Anton when they're leaving (something to the effect of "I'll tell you what Anton...) and then the woman at the end. Unless it is just his name sounds something like Anton

No Country for Old Men is a truly awesome movie, thirty years ago I saw Federico Fellini's La Strada and to this day I am still think about it. I'm sure years from know I will still be thinking about this one.

It would be nice to see "Spoilers" somewhere in the title or Topic Summary.

Come on. Most people assume with a title 'What does it all mean?' and a summary of 'No Country for Old Men' that there will be discussion about the plot. This isn't some random thread where someone suddenly blurts out 'DARTH VADER IS LUKE'S FATHER!'.

You're right. I guess I wish I hadn't clicked on it like a dumbass. Had to blame somebody.
