what does "hard drive initializing" mean

I wanted to take all my mp3/music video collection to a friend's house so they could leech some of them...so I took my storage drive out of my computer, and put it as a slave into theirs. It said hard drive initializing...then wouldn't do anything... fearing it was formatting, I took the hard drive out and went home. Now win2k hangs when the hard drive is in, and winxp disk manager services doesn't know what to do with it...I've tried rescuing it but the rescue disk I tried using won't work when the hard drive is in, but functions fine when the HD is out. sooo does "initializing" mean the same thing as formatting? or what

the reason it wouldn't work AFAIK is becuase you had two 'primary partitions' which is impossible under FDISK, and probably other partitioning programs made by MS (including whatever is in Windows 2K/XP).

so what happened when you installed and booted up your harddrive on your friends computer wasn't a FORMAT AFAIK, just simply 'indecision' on the computers' part. it couldn't figure out what hard drive to use AFAIK.

however the fact that win2K hangs when the HD is in means SOMETHING was done to the MBR or something like that.

when you say win2K hangs, do you mean it hangs on bootup?

are both Win2K and WinXP installed on that HD?
