What does HAM in HAM radio mean?

The actual meaning has long been lost, but it is generally thought the have been an insult when originally used. When radio communications were first starting, there were no set frequency allocations, so everyone was using the same frequencies. "Professional" broadcasters probably called amateurs 'hams' meaning that they were not very good operators.

THere was a ham radio exhibit at the Franklin Institute some years ago and an exhibitor there told me that it was just because many amateur radio operators were hams in the sense of the word that they were always showing off on the air.
