What does FUBAR mean?

I have heard people say it many times, but never found out what it means... can anyone tell me?

Ever see Saving Private Ryan? They explain it quite nicely.

Effed up beyond any recognition

yeah I saw Saving Private Ryan... and I get the idea of what it means... I just thought maybe FUBAR actually stands for something?

EDIT: Thanks!

actually i believe it originated further back than SPR... in an old frank...err Sly Stallone & (i believe) Kurt Russel movie, Tango and Cash.

Intake - not all pithy quotes come from movies.

FUBAR was a common acronym in use during WWII. You may also have heard of SNAFU? Another WWII classic.

SNAFU - Situation Normal: All Effed Up

Yep, my father used the acronyms SNAFU and FUBAR quite often. He was a WWII veteran and told me how he learned those terms in the service.

AS Navy technicians in the '70s we used FUBAR to mean F'd Up Beyond All Repair. This is an old term, who knows when it or SNAFU originated but it certinaly was NOT in modern movies.

Very enlightening. When I first read the orig. quest. I thought of tango and cash, but now I know better, clear back to WWII. Thanks fellas. Thanks.
