What does DB stand for, as in DB connector?

"A connector for a computer cable in which the plug and socket are D-shaped so they only fit together one way.DB connectors are often used for serial ports.DB-9 connectors have 9 pins and are used to connect a mouse.DB-25 connectors have 25 pins and are used to connect a printer" courtesy of Computer User Dictionary. Hope this helps.

Data Bus?
Double Binary?
Direct Bandwidth?
David Bowie?

I've been learning about serial port communications, and have been curious, that's all. I know what one is, and have looked for a derivation, and have found nothing but definitions, like ojai00's.

Here's the answer, from another forum

D-shell connector - One of the family of connectors: DA-15, DB-25, DC-37, DD-50, DE-9, and DEH-15 [VGA]. The "D" is the shape of the shell, the next letter determines connector size, and the number is the maximum pin count.

DB often also stands for "Daughter Board" such as the General MIDI modules you could snap onto many sound cards including the current Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.

Which makes sense, considering that the old Mac monitor connectors (before the ADC connectors) were known as DB-15 connectors. They looked kinda like overgrown serial (DB-9) connectors: they had two rows of pins, with the top row having one more pin than the bottom row.

The official name of these plugs is:

The 25-pin (or 9) D-subminiature.

There are probably components that use DS and DU so the next letter (from the word sub) is ?B?
