I just reformatted a client's system and installed the OS and programs. It was an HP system, and I used the restore disks that I made from the system to restore it.

She says that a week after I fixed it, it came up with the error "Code Purple." She took it in to where she bought it, and they said that the HD had failed.

What does "Code Purple" mean in regards to HP systems? It doesn't seem to me that the HD failed, but I haven't seen the system since this happened.

From what I can find out, a Code Purple Error Message is one where something major has changed in a system. There are soime references here in this chain of messages. Scroll down and look for different color replies.

Apparently, it is an error from HP saying that the mobo has to be retattooed. It has to do with the serial of the mobo. I guess if you replace the mobo, and then try to use the restore CD's to restore the system, it will not recoginize the new mobo as the mobo that came with the system, and will give this error. A special program on a floppy will be needed to "retattoo" the mobo.

A poster from the following thread stated that the only way around this is to restore the system with an OEM version of Windows:
