what does bringing your gf to meet your parents mean to you?

I always wonder the degree of seriousness people think when you bring your gf or boyfriend over to have dinner w/ parents...

so lets say you bring your gf home to meet your parents and for dinner. Does this symbolize anything? does it mean that you two are very very serious(as in have plans to have life together), or is it just "dinner," and no big deal.

and also, once you date someone, how long do you usualy wait before they meet the parents?
 
I think my gf first met my parents at a parade during Mardi Gras at the apartment they had on St Charles. I'm pretty sure they were plastered (not sure, because I certainly was). If not, at some other party my family was having. It was probably a week or so after we started hooking up. It's not that big of a deal with my family. All of my gfs and friends have met my parents/family pretty quickly into knowing each other...my family is a lot of fun! Hell, in college, I brought some girl from the dorms who was stuck in New Orleans for Thanksgiving to my grandparents' house to have dinner with my whole family. I think I had spoke to her once or twice before that...

At my age, 29, no chance in hell I would bring a random 'ho to meet my folks. I mean, she'd have to be skeezer of the month whom I was considering on making my bitch for good.

Definite Wifey material.......
