They don't solve world hunger, but they can do some amazing things with bones and joints if they're conscientious and well-educated. There are good, bad, and meh chiros, just like with anything else.

Does ATOT really want to open this can of worms again? This has been beaten to death over and over.

They can probably help you with joint, muscle, and bone issues, but if they start promising that stage 4 terminal cancer you have can be cured by adjusting your spine I'd run.

They are as effective as physical therapists...

just don't let any weird chiros convince you to undergo unfounded treatment

My personal experience has been that they do nothing but bill me. I'd rather have a good doctor and a physical therapist.

I can't comment on if they actually work because I have not seen or read any studies on the subject.

That said, I did have 3 doctors tell me I have broken ribs, but my ribs were not getting any better with time. I went to a sports medicine specialist who brought a guy in who looked at my xrays and then moved my arm funny and I felt my whole rib cage pop. Then the pain was gone. He said I had dislocated a rib. I think my sports doctor told me the guy he brought in was a osteopath.

This.

A few weeks back, my sacrum, l4 and l5 decided to whip my ass. That morning, my choice was to wet the bed or crawl to the bathroom because I couldn't stand up. The wife said, "Wet the bed and you won't have to worry about me taking the covers again.":\ Sympathy not found.

Admit to being skeptical but much better after several visits.

also, it's not a call out thread. no one was named, and it's not the OPs fault that someone had to put their job in their signature to feel legit.

As long as they're not treating conditions they should obviously not treat, they're fine, but still smell of a bit of sanke oil, particularly those the have you come back for weekly/monthly adjustments.

Also, no one has ever explained to me how manipulating a joint that's encapsulated by cartilage doesn't in fact loosen the joint by mucking around with it's capsule and supporting structures all the time. Strengthening the muscles that provide support makes sense, but stretching the joint capsule repeatedly really doesn't. Of course if the joint becomes unstable as a result, there's some return business for a chiro...

If you have a problem with a joint they can provide therapy. Just like an eye doctor will give you glasses. Don't expect more and walk away from any quack who claims to deliver more.

Somewhere between option 2 and option 3. I feel exactly the same about Chiro, as I do about OMM. In certain circumstances, it has it's use and is a wonderful treatment modality. However, there are areas in its supposed scope, that are bordering on absurd (and some, maybe a bit more OMM here) that are far across that border.

Its a bit of 2 and 3. The problem is, many chiros think the scope of their practice involves ADHD (whoops, I mean ADHD-like symptoms) treatment among other things that are very clearly beyond the scope of what they can treat.

If it were just the third one, why wouldn't they go into a legitimate medical field that they'd be doing the same thing in?

I have yet to encounter a chiropractor that doesn't believe enough bullshit that I seriously question their knowledge and ability to treat any thing.

Lastly, there are chiros that go out of their way to trash actual medical professions, defend snake oil aspects, hold ignorant beliefs about things such as vaccines, make claims about studies that aren't supported by the studies they're actually citing, publicly display information about patients, and in general act irrationally.

I'm a firm believer in chiropractic.

Does it have its limitations? You betcha it does, and a GOOD chiropractor not only knows those limitations, but makes sure the patient also knows them.

Hell, the chiropractor I saw for years has referred me to a neurosurgeon, has told me, "You need a medical doctor for this. I can't help you.", on a couple of occasions. He's offered to provide physical therapy for the follow-up/rehab, IF the neuro recommended it, but never pushed.

I've had back problems for decades. The MD's want to push pain pills, but offered no real solutions. The chiropractic, while not actually healing the problem, were able to keep me mobile and working without surgery.

Time and hard work has taken its toll on my back. The last two neurosurgeons I saw have told me that they can't fix me with surgery. Too much damage on too many levels. Unfortunately, my current insurance coverage won't authorize chiropractic as pain management...so, since I refuse to take the "stupid pills," I live with the pain.
Pain just reminds you that you're still alive...right?
