What does AMD expect.....????

Does AMD expect its users to buy better heatsinks and fans than the ones they provide in the retail box?

I ask because my 1.2 Tbird runs at 60 C under load.

doesnt matter if you dont overclock, and most people dont (most "normal" people, i.e. not hardware freaks like most here). but 60c seems a little toooo high, did you put it on correct and apply AS2 correctly?

I didnt overclock and i didnt use arctic silver....shouldnt the cpu be running at decent temps? i mean AMD obviously thinks the retail heatsink/fan is adeqeute

you shouldn't need artic silver... the stock heatsink and compound should be good for the non-overclocked.

Are you sure you have the HSF installed correctly, and the seal between the HSF and processor is reasonably tight?

It should not be that high with the reatil HSF unless you have an extremely crowded and small case with virtually no air flow.

Some motherboards detect temperatures much higher than others. For example my MSI detects a cpu/heatsink combo at 70C, but my Epox detects it at 50C, you tell me.

As long as the ceramic isn't very hot I wouldn't worry.

I always think the best option is to just feel the bottom of the heatsink with your finger. I'm writing this on a computer I've just bought my parents, which is a Duron 750 running at 930 MHz. I'm using a QuietPC Socket A cooler, the 1.33 GHz maximum one. The Asus Probe monitor and BIOS are both reporting 59 degrees, which sounds rather hot, yet when I touch the heatsink, it doesn't feel too warm really, plus the computer is stable, so I'm going to leave it.

I woudl agree, I built many AMD retail systems with lower cpu temps than that... Keep in mind, now many heatsinks have a front and back for the little step thing near, if ya got it backwards, it won't sit flat on the cpu core....

as PHANTOM pointed out the temp readings may vary due to the mobo-manufacturer when they try to narrow down the actual temp.
ASUS-mobos i.e. give high temps, EPOX low ones, while MSI is in the middle of these.
what brand is your mainboard ?

dont mean to insult you, but check if you removed the plastic cover of the heat sink goo that the stock fan comes with. This has happened in the past. So some people might overlook this step.

Feel the heatsink while system is on if it feels warm/hot then it is doing its job. Motherboard temperture reports are alway inaccurate. The AMD CPU's do run hot though.

again mobo temp readings are always off...

really...judt touch the HS your self and if its just warm ten it should be fine...but the stock HSF by amd should work fine...
