Well does it really mean they engineer hardware?

My uncle sent me this email. He got it from a friend who needs help.

----
I have a request for you; who in your local organization would be willing to entertain the questions of an IT Equipment Engineer (recent graduate - I don't have the details for this one). Background is either hardware components or the actual application software.

It's more a mentoring assignment than anything else; to help someone focus. In this case, I would like to just pass the contact information in order to put the two people together and let them talk.
----

I'm not an engineer of anything, I graduated with a degree in Operations and Information Management so I don't think I can be of help. I do know how to program but I'm not very technical in that area yet.

I have a hard time understanding what the guy wants but yeah, it seems like he wants someone who has experience to talk to a recent graduate about IT engineering. Not the other way around. I wish my uncle would not send me stuff that doesn't help me :p

engineer is one of those funny little words in job titles that may or may not actually mean anything.

Anything from the guy who sets up LANs to engineers with PhDs that design high end network equipment.

that's almost what I do... it was super cool and exciting at first getting to play with hardware that costs more than I make in three months, but it gets quite boring.

lately most of my days have been spent doing stupid crap like cleaning racks, fixing cable management, etc.
