Just be happy your recipe is not measuring pasta in handfuls. I got a few recipes passed down to me that had that on it. Apparently grandma just measured out a handful of elbow pasta per person when making mac and cheese. :)

Wheredo you think a cup comes from? A cupped hand is about a cup by volume.

If the pasta is the main course, I'd assume 6-8oz(dry weight) per person. You should be able to eyeball the other crap you're putting in.

Managed to get it done and yeah it made enough. I ended up using about 3 cups since I only had 1 cup left in the bag, not worth storing that on it's own. It's surprising how what looks like not a lot ends up making a big quantity. Just threw me off, first time cooking something to this extent.

Are you nuts! You're talking over a pound of cooked pasta per serving. And that's just the pasta with nothing else.

It's a bit much, but I can eat that easily. In fact, I do every time I make pasta. It's better to have too much, than not enough.

1 pound of pasta should feed 4-5 people

as a main course

1 pound of pasta ie spaghetti and all you are eating is spaghetti and meatballs, a salad, bread and a drink 1 pound will be plenty for 4 to 6 people

if its a side like a side of mac and cheese to eat with turkey or something than a pound is probably good for 14 to 18

Hence the trend the last few decades of having your stomach diameter be nearly as large as your height. It's better to have too little, than too much. Then you can stop eatting at the correct amount if you want to be healthy. Or, if you want to be unhealthy, you now have room for tasty desert. Either way, you win by having the main meal be a bit too little.
