what does a canadian zip code look like?

I'm writing a small web app, and I would like to validate the zip code against the country the entered. For instance, the basic US zip code if 5 characters, 62223, and even though you will find 62223-3344 and so forth, the basic zip code is the first 5 characters. How is it for Canada? Mexico?

I'll google it as well, but if anybody has anything to say, please do.

....
sigh... funny how i know NY has 10001, LA is around 90076 or something...

Canadians are LETTER NUMBER LETTER SPACE NUMBER LETTER NUMBER.
like... J8C O3D . May or may not have spaces.

Santa's postal code is

H0H 0H0

🙂

(kinda serious actually... if kids mail a letter to Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H 0H0, the post office sends them a "reply" from Santa) 🙂

I guess Santa knows 1337 sp34k

US system of five digits allows for 100,000 zip codes
Canadian system allows for 13,824,000 postal codes.

Yup, you can rule down a postal code to one of 5 houses or so. So even if someone botches your address the post office can usually figure it out and get your package to you.

I thought canada didn't have zip codes. Don't they just write "Igloo Block C" on there or something?

yup - and the dog sled comes by once a month to pick up and drop off. actually you just need to write "send this one to Bob eh?" right on the envelope, and it'll get there...

Sounds painful.

To find out what my postal code is:

1. Hit reply to my message
2. View source
3. Look for the postal code in the source.

We don't have electricity here in Canada yet, so all this message board stuff is done by mail. We send our messages via letters to the Canadian central server centre which houses the only powered building in the country, and the only computer. Funny thing is though, it's actually in the Canadian embassy in the US, so it's not really in Canada. Some dude who types really fast posts for us. When you reply to this message, a copy has to be sent back to me, so it sends it via mail.

Yup! Can't believe I remember that. I only heard it when my parents listened to it, and they moved to Chicago in '96. I joined them three years later. It may have been eight years since I heard that spoken on the air.

but, U.S. has 9 digit zipcodes also, just no one uses the last 4 thus we are limited, but including those last 4 gives a lot more options
