What does a boxsprings do?

All the beds in the dormitories here are setup wtih plywood placed between the rails to form a flat surface and matress sits on top.

I had a really, really, really cheap bed in college that had a box. Not a boxspring, just a box with no springs in it. The damn thing squeaked a LOT. It embarassed the crap out of my girlfriend... for some reason.

I'm not sure why not plywood.
