Got a machine here that the HSF has a bearing going out and the fan hasn't been running at full speed. It makes noises and drags. I can format/fdisk the HDD but I get errors when trying to install the OS. It's an old P133 with Win 95. If I put in the 95 Start Disk and Win 95, I get the errors. If I put in my Win 98 disk and CD it will install. ???

That's a no brainer . . . replace the cooler/fan assembly! The CPU is still good - otherwise it would not boot!

I had/have the same exact problem with an AMD k6 233mhz. I asked people here a while ago and couldnt figure it out.
OS and programs wont install, but everything else is fine.
Tried installing linux also, it just freezes. I'd be an interested in a solution too.

It'll usually start insulting your mother, it'll tell you it doesn't like you, and blood will ooze out the sides of the computer. Call an exorcist right away.

Do try replacing the fan though. Did it ever have any problems before this, or did you just acquire the computer?

Actually, it isn't a no brainer. I have an aux fan on it. It's a friends machine, she bought a new one and wants to give this one to her daughter. I got 98 to install on it but it won't read many other CD's. Some work in it and some don't. IE, I can install win 98 from the CD but it dosen't see the win 95 disk. I can install Acrobat from the CD but it dosen't see Encarta. All the disks work in my machine. Sounds like a CD ROM problem now that I write this but wouldn't it either work or not work, all the time?
