Every resource I can find, and everyone who has used them that I know, refers to it as the asian or anime smiley.

try playing an MMO, you get used to all sorts of this shit.
try playing an MMO that has alot of chinese farmers, you also get good with hanyu pinyin. ni hao, cao ni ma, as well as shorthand. 999 = help, 88 = bye bye (bai bai), 555 = party (i think...)
unfortunately, i still seem to use the shorthand even though i stopped playing the game.
