What documentation do I need to build and sell?

I would like to build computers for people in my spare time and maybe make a little bit of extra money. I was just wondering if I need any legal documentation to start doing this, or if this would just be considered a hobby. Any input that anyone could give me would be appreciated.

The standard liability waiver would be a good idea. Just put it on the bill of sale and have them sign it.

It depends on which side of the IRS you want to be on.

You should register a "DBA" (Doing Business As) with your city, and pay quarterly taxes.

If you're going to be a reseller (buying wholesale and reselling), you'll need a resale license so you can buy without paying sales tax and handle collecting and turning in the sales taxes you collect from your customers.

If you're going to do it on a regular basis, you should check out the requirements for a business license. The laws are different in various states and counties, so you'll have to check them out in your area.

Good luck. :)
