What's the mindset behind substituting french fries? Yes, please charge me more money to substitute an inferior item, for I am an idiot and deserve neither money nor happiness.

This must be a California hipster thing. We usually get Onion Rings or Sweet Potato Fries instead of French Fries here.

Yogurt? What the hell?

I try to avoid french fries because they are kinda bland and filled with "empty calories". I try to reserve empty calories for beer. So I eat more meat, always get 1 pound burger if its an option, it not, the 3/4 pounder or two half pounders. soup or salad or chilli if available. Fill up as much as I can on veggies. I limit my food to 4000 calories, but my appetite is for over 9000 calories. (I am a hungry hungry man.) a pound of peas or asparagus extra tomato or peppers or onion helps a lot, and is much less likely to wind up around my waist vs going with 2 of the 1 pound burgers or 4 of the half pounders.

Tater tots are vastly superior form of fried potato based product, particularly if they're coated in magical spices from Taco John's. If I'm in the mood for something totally different, sweet potato fries or salad are good too.

depends on the restaurant... I'm a little picky with my fries and I'd rather have mediocre onion rings than bad fries.

(I only enjoy fries when they're thin, crispy, and salty. DNW steak fries or anything otherwise too potato-y)

there is no substitute for fries.

maybe something like ribbon chips at the fair although i think they're technically fries too.

there is no substitute, because fried potatoes are one of the greatest things to eat.

But if I'm feeling randy, a tebuleh salad, if available.

Place I go to used to have eggplant fries, served with grated parmesan and a side of marinara. Christ were they good. Have no idea why they dropped them from the menu. Their regular fries suck.

I find it odd that the question assumes that every meal is served with french fries as a standard side.

It's certainly not the case in the vast majority of places where I eat, even for under $10 lunches. That's typical of a burger meal, maybe steaks, some (not all) sandwich joints, a few diners, but I've never eaten Mexican or Indian or Thai or Chinese or Mongolian or Italian, nor at places that specialize in salads or noodles or burritos or pizza or subs ... ... ... where fries would be "substituted" for.
