Hang out with positive friends, or if I'm alone, listen to some Infected Mushroom. Somehow their music always seems to lift me up. I've only listened to them sober and drunk, so I can't comment on the other stuff people take while listening to them.

I was seriously considering suicide after my phone interview with Wells Fargo last Monday. the lady basically said I'm unemployable by anyone thanks to my job history.

Flat out honestly I got fired from my last job, and the job before that the company went under so basically from 2003-2008 I have no positive job references.

I have a ton of experience with depression unfortunately. Some of the things I have learned over the years.

Do not spend time alone. If you have no friends , go for a walk, shopping, anything that will place you around other people as some form of interaction.

When depressed it distorts your view on the world. Thinking in extremes often happens where you think things like " I will never find a job" or "I can't do anything right" so watch out for words like never, anything, always in your thinking.

Set a goal for the day and promise yourself you will do it. It can be something small like getting the mail or sweeping the floor. anything that will give you a sense of "I set a task for myself and I completed it"

Don't compare your life to anyone else life as a measure of why you are not happy.

Go outside if you can , sunlight has a proven anti-depressant quality.

If you are serious then you should find a counselor in your area.
The lady you talked to was full of crap, how can she say that you are unemployable by anyone ? Does she know everyone that is alive ?

Listen to good music. Watch movies or shows that get you out of your head for a while. Work out.

make 'em up?

one of the companies that i worked for went bankrupt... out of business... kaput...
but i was friends with my co-workers... so we each 'act as supervisor' for one another... if i need a supervisor reference from there.. i use one of them... same for me..

and one of the companies i worked for, i left on bad terms... but... i use a buddy of mine who was a supervisor... he's now a "manager" for the company (actually.. he quit before i left.. but you get the point)

Oh I'd love to talk to someone, I need to find someone free and local though.

I've not tried that. I guess I'm too afraid of getting caught. I was never good at being deceptive. I'd make the worst spy ever.

Getting caught would never factor into it.. if you do it right.

Your buddy has to have all the info... company name, address, what your position was, what your tasks were... they dont even have to have worked there. just as long as they're willing to say you were a good employee, etc..

hey op, try taking a multivitamin and getting some sun.. If you're indoors more often now than you were before, it's possible you're not getting enough sunlight.

I haven't been depressed for a couple years now. Sure, I'm sad from time to time which is completely normal due to the circumstances.

Though I guess I could be in some deep seated denial because if I do say I'm depressed pretty much everyone around me will say "See! You need to be on your meds!" No. I believe a lot of depression can be treated through psychotherapy (talk therapy) as long as the type of therapy is appropriate for you. Antidepressants are overprescribed.

But when I was depressed, it was debilitating. I slept a lot...sometimes between 12 and 18 hours at a time.

I used to have a lot of social anxiety too, and it was probably linked to my depression. The best therapy I ever got was in Summer 2009 when I was working with a crew repainting some residence halls at my school. The school provided on campus housing free of charge for us. Pretty much every day after work I would go straight to my room and not talk to anyone.

Well eventually, one of the other guys on the crew would come see me in my room and just hang out. And he would practically drag me out of my room to other places and force me to socialize with other people. I hated it at first but over time I became more comfortable and my happiness improved dramatically. That guy did more to improve my quality of life than any doctor or drug ever did. And he doesn't even have a psych background.

I've yet to try weed. One day I will certainly but just recreationally not as a form of medication for depression or anxiety.

And yeah I should get out more. In fact I've been thinking of starting a series of hikes around my local area. I've been meaning to take up geocaching.

set goals. minor, major, long-term, short-term... it doesn't matter. talk to depressed people and ask them if they have any goals in life. usually they don't.

for me, an easy way to get depressed is to look back instead of forward.

another thing i do if i am feeling down is positive affirmations. self-talk, if you will... Stuart Smalley style. it's cheesy but it works. you can talk to your subconscious like a little kid, and after a while you will start believing the things you tell yourself. :)

edit: oh ya, one more thing to break out of a funk... help people. concentrate on others, get out of your own head for a while. volunteer, contribute to your community... get out and do something... helping other people is a path to happiness especially when you are doing it and asking for nothing in return.

lemme see if i can find this Chinese proverb i like........

If you want to be happy for an hour, take a nap;
if you want to be happy for a day, go fishing;
if you want to be happy for a week, take a vacation;
if you want to be happy for a month, get married;
if you want to be happy for a year, inherit a fortune;
if you want to be happy for the rest of your life, help other people.

I've never been depressed, but I have been struggling a little bit since I graduated and moved to a new city to start my job. Haven't met many people yet (which I suck at, wish I could figure out). I'm usually okay alone, but every once in awhile it will start to get to me for a few days. Working, working out, and sitting out at the pool has kept me pretty busy for the last few weeks, which I think is the key.

Talk to a recruiter/headhunter. I knew a guy who was in your same situation and he got a new job because of a recruiter. Sometimes people get fired simply because their skillset is not appropriate for a given job. It doesn't mean you can't be great at something else.

The gym has been my best cure lately. You can feel good for the rest of the day if you really wear yourself out. I'll usually walk into the gym feeling tired and a bit down and walk out feeling loopy with exhaustion. I get a good, relaxed feeling after I cool off from a wicked hard workout.

Sunlight also seems to help me a lot. Getting out and about early on a sunny day is a fantastic mood lifter.

I second the "go work out" suggestion. Force yourself if you have to to go for a speed walk, a jog, a run. Work out hard. Get your heart beating, your pulse pulsating.
Get in shape, buy a size smaller clothes, look in the mirror, and say, "you look great".
No way you will feel depressed after that.
