Just curious what the people of ATOT like to do when feeling down. I actually men real depression as opposed to just a little blue. Last few weeks have been a bit of a down and anxious period for me as I search for a job. Been on meds for both for years as most know. Exercise helps a fair amount but only for an hour or so. I find a hot bath works similarly for 1/2 hour or so. But when you are anxious / depressed 24/7 they only go so far.

On I side not I had what seemed like a good mini interview for an assistant managerial position at an EB Games today. So that may pan out well. Course with this kind of issue you are sort of fucked if you do and fucked if you don't as you will get more anxious if you get the job or not (anxious if don't get the job and anxiety caused by the new job). Yipee. :|

I'm not emo either. I don't ear black makeup, don't write poetry, don't cry, don't war black etc... I try not to dwell on the issue either. I do other things. I just have trouble going about the day sometimes without feeling like I'm caring a 200 pound weight with me everywhere.

Depends, sometimes I'll see if they need help at work, sometimes I'll game, go out with friends or actually one that seems to help, go on craigslist, to the strictly platonic section, and either post there or message someone who sounds interesting, generally I get a good couple days worth of conversation out of them and for whatever reason makes me feel better

I time travel.

Other than that, I read the Bible and meditate on different scriptures therein or listen to sermons (John MacArthur on gty.org)

Huh the craigslist thing sounds interesting. Eventually I plan on working up to dating but not yet so if it's strictly friends thats good.

Work does help as I know from when I was working before. Though the type of work I'm going to be doing now and was doing then is not the type where you can just go in and do extra stuff really. Gaming is an OK distraction but actually makes it worse sometimes. Though right now I'm having fun with SMG2.

Lol on time travelling. Oh and on a related side not, long live Crono Trigger. Best game I've ever played!

Won't be reading the Bible any time soon as I'm an atheist.

Yea because I'm married I keep it friendly talk only and I make that clear at the start of the conversation, if they are of the opposite sex and can't handle that one stipulation, I just move on. And before anyone asks, yes I do talk to my wife, but when she's outta town for 2 weeks at a time, and I only work 3-4 days a week I gotta pass the time somehow!

I would connect a high power audio amplifier 10kW to a power tool and play bass heavy music with a high Q notch filter centered around 50Hz.

Nothing like watching a mid size AEG hammerdrill do the watsui to Grandmaster Flash or Digital Underground. :D

Now with where I am and what I do there is little issue with depression. Heck if anything I could probably use a little something to calm me down.

For that I usually read 3-4 books a week.

But you are blessed with a dream job. :awe:

BTW how in the world did you land such a job? What were your qualifications before hand and how did you apply and or learn about such a position?

Yup, Chrono Trigger is my fave game.

Even if are an atheist, the Bible is an interesting read. People attack the historicity of it all the time, but it's held up the past 2,000 years or so as a good historical reference (it's still used a lot comparatively) and the stories of the rise and fall of different individuals and civilizations ins unparalleled by any other book.

You can understand a lot of other literary references (even in TV shows, lol) and phrases in modern English language by knowing the Bible. Regardless of whether you believe it or not, it really has shaped Western civization to a large degree.

The best cure for depression - and the only real one - is perspective. Seeing others in need and setting yourself the goals of helping them is the only way to pull yourself out. Depression is mostly a disease of self centeredness. You start looking at your own issues too long and you get drowned in them. Start reaching out to whoever needs help.

Start small, start local: your family, neighbors. Even people you don't necessarily like or know.

Out of all of that - the bolded was the only thing I understand and totally agree on:p On a real note though, reading has got me through some low times. But again, getting out there and talking and laughing with people help alot also:)

Exercise helps a fair amount but only for an hour or so.
What kind of exercise? Cardio (running, biking, etc.) and weightlifting have very different physiological effects. Weight lifting, particularly going heavy with squats and deadlifts, increases testosterone levels which generally has a good effect on mood.

Cardio. 4 m/hr at a 10% incline 40mins per day. That's about a brisk walk, but because of the incliune I get drenched in sweat and get my heart rate up to about 160 most of the time so it's a good workout despite the slowish speed. I do some very minor weights as well. Bisep curls 25 lb weight 15-20 reps.

get drunk and beat off

lol. I did the drinking thing for long enough to know that only leads to bad things! Was drinking close to 2 bottles of vodka a week or more at one point. Now I only drink at family gatherings and the like.

Depression has my personal HELL for two years now.. girlfriend/mate of ten years left me and moved to Singapore... I have been to hell and visited for a long time...

One of the keys is
Highlight the positive and be honest about the negative...
Unconditional Friendliness with one self
-------------
From the movie Peaceful Warrior
****
Where are you Dan? "Here"
What time is it? "Now"
What are you? "This Moment"

have to fight as hard as you ever have to realize that everything you do IS a choice.. all of it - we are the most advanced machines there are but our maintenance programs are incredibly simple... if you don't run the maintenance programs then the system will overload with self hate and breakdown

Depression is a Virus and Self-love is all that can cure it

listen to some audiobooks maybe

you may never get better unless you realize your pain/lack of self love/general hate for life --- HURTS EVERYONE

I wish you all the best and you must love yourself and drop ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Expectations on everyone and every thing

I have had some serious injuries to the left side of my body
fell off balcony holding on with left arm.. shoulder and back are EFFFFFFd
had left foot-ankle-leg ran over by a utility trailer when young
hit by a car on left side while riding bike
-------------------------------------------------------
^^ I bring that up because .. lately I have been doing LONG hours of stretching/and light weights... I FEEL GREAT because of it.. I have been stretching every single muscle and breathing better etc.. very slow and deliberate stretches.. like.. stretching all the muscles of my foot that got crushed by the trailer.. better than sex.. lol

I used to go to Gold Gym and move a bunch of weight but when i look back it feels shameful... not holistic healing etc.. i built muscles out of fear.. now I am building them out of love... I could pump out 15 reps with 275 easily.. but it was just stupid ego shit... now I am doing what I need for the day I turn 80 etc..
